Banchan

While I'd had tasty meals at various Korean joints around town, the banchan had always been a tad underwhelming. Don't get me wrong: the food has been delicious, but the tiny plates of Korean appetizers help to set the tone for the meal. After constantly pining for the same kind of quality I was used to in LA's Koreatown, Ho Soon Yi finally scratched an itch I'd had since moving here.

Okonomiyaki
Every time I step foot into Tanuki, my basic perception of what a sake bar should be takes on a drastic tectonic shift. Truthfully, I'm hard pressed to even describe the cuisine, which I'm eager to do with anyone within earshot. Upscale izakaya? Japanese tapas through a Northwest lens? No matter how I try, Tanuki continues to defy description as well as challenge my own expectations, but in a good way. Every time I step foot into Tanuki, it gets better.

Palabok
Since I'm about a thousand miles away from my closest kin, finding out about Tambayan was like discovering a long lost cousin. The adage goes that in order to have good Filipino food, you have to go someone's house, and this restaurant feels just like that. Like any reunion, all it takes is the smallest connection, and a hearty plate of food will welcome you like it's known you forever.

Taste Glasses

I'm a little late reporting from Taste of the Nation, a charity devoted to helping end hunger in America. Held in the Portland Convention Center, it helped me knock out two birds with one proverbial stone by getting my altruism on as well as taking part in a city-wide tasting menu. However, once I stepped foot in the convention hall, I stopped being a foodie with a heart, and took on the role of glutton.
